Built for the real world, not the podium.
Most adult martial arts falls into two camps: sport competition, or cardio dressed up in a gi. This is neither.
American Jiu-Jitsu, derived from traditional Japanese Hakko-Ryu, is built on leverage, timing, and knowing the body, so size and strength aren't what decide who walks away safe. We train standing defense, defense against weapons, ground defense, and multiple attackers. The situations that come up, trained with control and without ego.
The fitness comes as a byproduct, and it's real. An hour on the mat works everything, and it's a lot harder to skip than a treadmill. But ask our long-term students why they're still here after five or ten years and nobody says the workout. It's the room. Training partners who push you honestly and pick you up afterward.
New to jiu jitsu? Your first class is Monday or Wednesday at 6:30 pm, or Saturday at 11:30 am. Those are the beginner-friendly classes where every one of our advanced students started.
Self-defense that works
Standing, on the ground, against weapons, against more than one. Trained honestly, with control.
Fitness with a point
Strength, mobility, and conditioning that come from doing the thing, not from staring at a clock.
Training partners, not opponents
No meatheads, no ego-rolling. People train here for years because of who's on the mat next to them.

Common Questions
What new adults ask
I’m not fit or coordinated. Can I still do this?
Yes. Jiu jitsu is the gentle art. It's built on leverage and technique, not size or athleticism. Nearly everyone starts out feeling uncoordinated. That's the point of starting.
I’m in my 40s or 50s. Am I too old?
Not even a little. We've got students in every decade of adulthood. You train at your pace with partners who match your intensity, and the leverage-first style is the one that ages well. That's kind of the beauty of it.
How is American Jiu-Jitsu different from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ is a sport, optimized for winning matches under a ruleset. American Jiu-Jitsu, from Japanese Hakko-Ryu lineage, is optimized for self-defense: staying on your feet, weapons awareness, multiple attackers, and ending things fast. Great sport. Different job.
Will I get hurt?
We train with control. It's a core value here, not a slogan. You'll be sore in the good way. Intensity always matches your experience and your consent.
Can I just come watch first?
Absolutely. Drop by any evening, or skip straight to the free class and feel it for yourself.

Self-defense is the focus
We teach American Jiu-Jitsu for practical self-defense. Classes combine technique, controlled partner practice, and the judgment to avoid conflict when possible.

An hour on the mat gives you a physical workout while you practice jiu jitsu. You also get to know the partners you train with each week. They challenge you, help you work through difficult techniques, and share in your progress.
