Adult Jiu Jitsu
Our American Jiu Jitsu classes are designed to teach students how to defend themselves in any real life situation. We also focus on increasing cardio strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and discipline.
The words Jiu Jitsu loosely translate as "the science of softness" or "the gentle art" and is applied to many schools of unarmed and hand-to-hand combat. The soft grappling style was intended to help unarmed soldiers to fight against armed enemies in any way possible, using the least amount of force necessary. Jiu Jitsu was the primary unarmed combat method of the Samurai. Modern day Aikido, Judo, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and MMA are all descendents of Jiu Jitsu.
Jiu Jitsu emphasizes the ability to turn an attacker's own force against him or herself, putting them off balance. It also utilizes certain grappling moves and strikes to vital areas. The Jiu Jitsu student is expected to learn how to gauge the force of an opponent's attack and use it against him, evade attacks, use leverage against an opponent and to attack nerves & pressure points.
Size, strength and flexibility are not the most important factors in achieving proficiency in this art, since Jiu Jitsu does not rely on brute force in order to achieve effective self-defense. The main goal in Jiu Jitsu practice is to cultivate a person's mind and body, not to use it as a means to vent one's anger, frustration or emotional problems. The use of force is condoned only in self-defense or in the defense of those who are defenseless.
HOW IS AMERICAN JIU JITSU DIFFERENT THAN OTHER MARTIAL ARTS?
Every martial art has its strengths and specialties. Some arts are sports oriented, artistic or demonstrative in nature. American Jiu Jitsu specializes in real world self-defense. We do not train for sport in our style. We suggest that you look into all of your options to better understand exactly what you are looking for.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO EARN MY BLACK BELT?
Some students have achieved the rank of black belt in as little as 5 years, where others have taken 10. The Metrowest Academy emphasizes that the martial arts is a lifestyle choice, not a journey to a specific destination. We encourage our students to train according to their abilities and comfort level. What is good for one student may not be good for another. The journey to black belt is dependent on each student training.
I HAVE NOT DONE A MARTIAL ART BEFORE. WHAT CAN I EXPECT MY FIRST EXPERIENCE TO BE LIKE?
You can expect a completely open and friendly environment in your first class and all classes. One of the best parts about our academy is the happy and welcoming nature of our instructors and students. Here's a quick overview of how to get started:
Call to book your new student evaluation so we can give you a brief overview before your first class
Jump into group class! Our introductory program includes 2 weeks of classes so you can get the "hands on" experience you need to make an educated decision on the best school for you.
I AM LOOKING FOR A HIGH LEVEL OF FITNESS TRAINING. CAN I EXPECT THAT HERE?
On top of learning self defense, our classes include high impact fitness and conditioning drills to increase cardio, discipline, strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. Although there is a good fitness component to the workouts, our Jiu Jitsu classes primarily focus on training self defense techniques. Many of our Jiu Jitsu students supplement their workouts with our HIIT Kickboxing class which is designed for a high impact, cardio workout.
HOW MUCH TIME IS NEEDED FOR TRAINING IN YOUR STYLE?
Progression in our system is based on training a minimum of 2 days per week. Many of our students come more often than that during the week.

Jiu Jitsu is a Great Challenge. Several friends of mine are martial artists - brown and black belts in various forms. I always wished I could do what they do but been fairly scared to try it myself, for fear of injury or whatever. But after watching a few classes led by Sensei Paul, I figured "why not try it". And I couldn't be happier or more pleased with the excellent instruction. I believe this is something I should have tried years ago. Sensei Paul makes the techniques easily understandable and fun to do. Class is a blast! It's always an interesting variety. I'm in the best shape of my life, and I just feel better walking down the street knowing that I can defend myself better now. – Cara T.
I would absolutely recommend The Metrowest Academy! In my opinion, the number one reason to join the academy is the instructor. Sensei Paul is a phenomenal teacher. More importantly, he is a genuinely good person who truly cares about the wellbeing of each and every student. No where else is this reflected more than in the atmosphere of the academy. Everyone that I’ve met in the academy is amazingly nice and has become like a second family to me. If you don’t believe me, just come down to watch a class. Joining the academy and training in Jiu Jitsu has been one of the best things that I’ve done in my entire life. Not only has it given me the skills and confidence to defend myself and family, but it has also gotten me into great shape. The adult Jiu Jitsu class has become something of an addiction to me. I hate to miss a class and when I do, I can’t wait to find out what I’ve missed. I love that it combines several different art forms (Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Muay Thai, and Western Boxing, to name a few). This style combines effective techniques from a variety of martial arts to make sure that we all get home safe and sound each night. I couldn’t recommend it more! – Tim F.
Jiu Jitsu has been the single most positive thing I have ever done for myself. I have spent my entire life being anxious, fearful, lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. Jiu Jitsu has given me the greatest gift and something I never had before –peace of mind and freedom from insecurity and self-doubt. There is a calmness and tranquility that is a part of me now. Nothing I had done or tried prior gave me what Jiu Jitsu has given me. I don’t even recognize that person anymore; I am a better and more peaceful person because of my training. The environment that Paul has created is not about aesthetics although the Academy is unlike most I have ever seen. What I refer to is the environment he has fostered due to he is unwavering dedication, commitment, and the passion. The people that train at the Academy are dedicated to their training but most important they are dedicated to helping each other reach their own individual goals. It is rare to find a place in this world where such camaraderie, support, and mutual respect exists. The caliber of Sensei Paul’s students is a testament of his ability to bring out the best in everyone he instructs. Positive people and environments like this are unique and someone with his commitment to giving everyone everything he can is even more extraordinary. – Holly G.
